One thing I’ve noticed over the years is almost every lifter has a favorite muscle group to train. Doesn’t matter if you’re natural, enhanced, new, or deep in the game there’s always that one body part you actually look forward to hitting.
For some people it’s chest because it feels powerful and heavy. For others it’s back because nothing beats the pump and the width coming in. Arms get a lot of love because they’re easy to train hard without feeling beat up, and legs… well, the people who love legs are built different mentally.
Having a favorite muscle group isn’t a bad thing, even though it gets a bad reputation. People like to say “don’t skip what you don’t like,” which is true, but liking a certain muscle group usually means you train it better. Better focus, better execution, better intensity. You push harder when you actually enjoy the work.
The downside is obvious though. Favorites can turn into overtrained body parts if you’re not paying attention. Extra sets, extra sessions, chasing pumps just because it feels good. Meanwhile the less loved muscles get the bare minimum and lag behind. That’s how physiques get imbalanced without people realizing it until prep photos or progress pics expose it.
I think the smart move is using your favorite muscle group as a tool. Let it anchor your week. Start training sessions strong with it, use that motivation to carry momentum into weaker areas, but don’t let it hijack your whole program. Liking something doesn’t mean abusing it.
At the end of the day, this lifestyle is hard enough. If having one muscle group you genuinely enjoy training keeps you consistent and excited to show up, that’s a win. The goal is long term progress, not forcing yourself to hate every session in the name of balance.
Do you have a favorite muscle group, or does it change depending on where you’re at in your cycle or phase of training?
